We know a lot about the risk factors that influence Native American youth development but very little about the assets that lead to thriving (e.g., school success, maintaining good health, and overcoming adversity) among these youth. This book begins with a review of the general positive youth development literature and ends by using a Native American Worldview to understand the results of this study. Specifically, a Native American Medicine Wheel called, The Circle of Courage, is used to guide the discussion and make sense of the results of this study from a positive perspective.
Edmund Bruyere, an Anishinabe First Nation tribal member of paternal decent, was born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He is a tribal member of the Sagkeeng First Nation located in Manitoba, Canada. He had the distinct honor of being mentored by James Garbarino, Ph.D. He earned his doctorate at Loyola University in Chicago.
