WELCOME I'm glad you have decided to read this book. Your interest in musicality shows that you want to dive deeper into the material of drumming. That's what distinguishes you from the many musicians who are only interested in the perfection of their own technique. If you are open to change, this book can help you evolve as a musician, and perhaps you will discover facets of yourself that you didn't know were there before. During the course of my career as a drummer, percussionist, and drum teacher, the topic of musicality has become more and more important to me. It was my aim to explore this somehow mystical and esoteric area of creating and playing music. I'm convinced that musicality is the decisive factor when playing an instrument. Perhaps it's even the cornerstone of any successful career as a musician. Musical performances where the musicians not only play with each other, but also for each other, always have a longer lasting and more meaningful effect on me. While on the other hand, technically-oriented, inauthentic, lifeless or musically unclear performances rarely touch me, even if they are presented flawlessly and are objectively correct. The subject of musicality has become my instrumental and pedagogical field of research. I am very grateful that I had the chance to learn from many wonderful mentors and fellow musicians and that I still have the opportunity to continue learning. I was able to interview some of them in the run-up to this book. They willingly and openly shared their experiences and know-how with me and thus also with you. I quoted the essence of the interviews with statements from artists like Joe Porcaro, Benny Greb, Peter Erskine, Wolfgang Haffner, René Creemers, amongst others. Have fun exploring and learning about the 5 HABITS OF A MUSICAL DRUMMER
